Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. An air conditioner or heat pump uses its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s circulated around your home. This liquid is found within the coils of a cooling system, but one of the most typical refrigerants that’s been in use for many years – the R-22 (Freon) is now being phased out because of environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. Production of R-22 will cease by 2020. Introducing R-410A Recognized by the EPA, R-410A is a chlorine-free and ozone-friendly refrigerant. That means it’ll keep your AC running cool without damaging the environment. Additionally, Lennox’s most highly efficient systems are engineered to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system perform efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for durability, quiet operation and enhanced dehumidification, so you’re sure to stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At Ben Maines Air Conditioning, Inc. in Longview, our cooling models can work with R-410A. If you have a system that was made prior to 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is scarce. Some manufacturers offer alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
