Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. A refrigerant is a liquid that is stored in your AC coils, which help cool and dehumidify the indoor air. Without refrigerants, air conditioning would not be possible. Over the years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, it will no longer be legal to produce R-22 as a result of its damage to the environment. Introducing R-410A To reduce environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now compatible with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and contains no chlorine, so it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel good about using this refrigerant in Longview because it’ll help make your AC perform efficiently, reliably and quietly, and provide the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was built before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You probably should think about upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is totally phased out. The old refrigerant will become rare in the next few years, costing you more to operate your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Ben Maines Air Conditioning, Inc. work with R-410A, so you can be sure we have an AC or heat pump more suited to your needs. Additionally, avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
